Where was The Christmas Quest filmed? Guide to (almost) all the locations in Iceland

Posted by

Featuring a breathtaking backdrop and magnificent locations, The Christmas Quest was filmed in Iceland.

Glaciers, lava caves, romance and a thrilling race for a legendary artefact, all set against the stunning Icelandic landscape: this is the film where a Hallmark production meets Indiana Jones!

Lacey Chabert and Kristoffer Polaha

This exciting and refreshing twist on the traditional Hallmark Christmas movie formula features two of the channel's most iconic actors.

Lacey Chabert stars as archaeologist Stefanie Baxter and Kristoffer Polaha as Chase, her ex-husband and Norse language expert.

Welcome to Iceland and our spoiler-free guide to all the filming locations of The Christmas Quest. You'll find the locations in order of appearance.

The Christmas Quest locations

Hearst College Rhode Island
The movie opens with establishing shots of downtown Boston, including the famous Great Hall, Quincy Market, and the Custom House Tower.

But for the fictional Hearst College in Rhode Island, the filmmakers used the Shirreff Hall residence at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

This location looks like the college where The Holdovers was filmed in Massachusetts.

Kilchurn Castle Scotland
The scene set in Scotland is introduced with an establishing shot of 15th-century Kilchurn Castle on the northeastern shore of Loch Awe in Argyll and Bute.

The Christmas Quest in Iceland

The Christmas Quest hotel
Already in Iceland, Stefanie and Chase stay at the Reykjavik Edition, part of Marriott's luxury hotel collection, located near the Old Harbour.

Opened in 2021, room rates often exceed $500 per night, depending on the season.

The Christmas Quest Iceland
The duo visit Hallgrímskirkja, the iconic Lutheran church completed in 1986, which has become one of Reykjavík's most recognizable landmarks.

Adorned with 6,500 LED lights, the cat statue at Lækjartorg Square is the "Yule Cat" (Jólakötturinn), a key figure in Icelandic Christmas folklore.

According to legend, which doesn't say anything about the size of its ball of yarn, the cat roams around at Christmas, preying on those who haven't received new clothes for the holiday.

Skálholt Cathedral
The scene at Skálholt Cathedral rivals the one in The Da Vinci Code saga's Inferno, where Tom Hanks searches for an artifact in St. John's Baptistery in Florence.

Located about 50 miles (80 kilometers) southeast of Reykjavik and surrounded by grassland in the middle of the countryside, this simple but elegant building was the seat of Iceland's bishops from 1056 to 1785.

The Christmas Quest Café Rosenberg
The cozy Café Rosenberg is a welcoming café in the heart of Reykjavik, popular among locals and visitors alike.

Reykjavík Christmas market
What's a Hallmark Christmas movie without a Christmas market scene?

In The Christmas Quest, these sequences were filmed at Ingólfstorg Square, a market with ice skating, food stalls, and local gifts.

Reykjavík Cathedral
This shot of the Reykjavík Cathedral (which is not the rocket-shaped church, Hallgrímskirkja) appears a few times during the movie.

Built in 1796, it is one of the oldest buildings in Reykjavik and is located on Austurvöllur Square, right across from the Icelandic Parliament.

The Christmas Quest Waterfall
After the scene at the old turf house, which we don't know where it is located, the intrepid adventurers head to Kvernufoss Waterfall.

Tucked away in a narrow gorge, where you can walk behind the cascading water, the fall is often a bit quieter than some of Iceland's more famous tourist spots.

Raufarhólshellir lava tunnel
Behind the waterfall, they arrive at Raufarhólshellir lava tunnel, which is actually located about 64 miles (103 kilometers) away.

One of Iceland's largest and most famous lava tubes, the entrance is often decorated with beautiful ice sculptures in winter, adding to the already surreal landscape.

Sólheimajökull glacier
During the quest, it looks like they are hiking the impressive Sólheimajökull glacier, a popular destination for ice climbing tours.

The glacier features striking blue ice, deep crevasses, and ash-covered surfaces, remnants of past volcanic eruptions from the nearby Katla volcano.

Yoda Cave Iceland
At one point, a famous landmark known as Yoda's Cave (Hjörleifshöfði), situated near the black sand beaches of Mýrdalssandur, makes an appearance.

The entrance to this cave has a unique shape that resembles the outline of the Star Wars character Yoda.

Rainbow Street in Reykjavik
The duo also walks Reykjavik's Rainbow Street, officially called Skólavörðustígur, a colorful pedestrian street that leads up to the famous Hallgrímskirkja church.

The couple also check out the Rutshellir Cave, a unique man-made cave located near the village of Hvolsvöllur in the Eyjafjöll mountains.

The cave is historically significant and may have served as a dwelling or storage space in the past.

Natural History Museum Iceland
The Christmas Eve gala at the Natural History Museum was filmed at Perlan, on Reykjavík's Öskjuhlíð Hill.

Originally built in the 1980s as a hot water storage tank, it has been transformed into a museum, observation deck, and event space.

The glass dome atop the structure is a striking architectural feature, offering panoramic views of the city and its bay.

Hi, the Hearst College building is actually the Sheriff Hall residence at Dalhousie University, not the Henry Hicks Building.
