Kevin Costner returns to the western genre with the Horizon: An American Saga, which was filmed primarily in Utah.

This four-part film series is set in the American West during the pre- and post-Civil War era, exploring the expansion and settlement of the western frontier.

Directed by Costner, the Dances with Wolves and Yellowstone series star, each chapter delves into various aspects of this transformative period in American history.

The story takes place in the territories of Wyoming, New Mexico and Montana - we will update the locations as the new movies are released.

Where was Horizon filmed?

The first chapter covers the early stages of westward expansion, focusing on the motivations and challenges pioneers and settlers faced as they ventured into the vast, unknown territories.

The scenes from the 1859 settlement of San Pedro Valley, Arizona, were filmed at Onion Creek and Professor Valley in Grand County, Utah.

Where was Horizon Chapter One filmed
Thanks to a detailed document from the Bureau of Land Management, we know the exact location of the overlook from which the Indians observe the newcomers.

The shoot took place between August and September 2022 in a Professor Valley viewpoint.

Horizon church in ruins
As far as we know, the spectacular Mexican church in ruins with the elegant staircase was a set built by the filmmakers.


Horizon An American Saga Wyoming town
The Wyoming scenes were filmed in the fall of 2022 in the La Sal Mountains near Moab.

The crew built the entire town where Hayes Ellison (played by Kevin Costner) meets Marigold (Abbey Lee).

The La Sal Mountains contrast the surrounding desert landscape, with snow-capped peaks and alpine scenery against the red rock desert below.

According to Deseret News, the producers also built an entire fort along the Colorado River somewhere outside of Moab.


Western Kansas Santa Fe Trail
Visit Utah reported that some filming took place in San Rafael Swell, Emery County.

These appear to be scenes on the Western Kansas Santa Fe Trail with the Wagon Comboy, filmed in this remote, scenic area characterized by deep canyons and vast plateaus.

This shot at the end of Chapter 1 looks like Canyonlands National Park.

Some additional filming was done in the Fruit Bowl, in Grand County.

Much of Chapter 2, which focuses on conflict with Native American tribes and survival as more settlers arrive, was filmed in and around St. George in Washington County and Durango, Colorado.
