Set in a fantasy world of fire-breathing dragons, Damsel was filmed primarily in Portugal, but also in England.

Featuring interesting locations, some never before seen in an international production, this Netflix epic movie tells the story of Princess Elodie.

Millie Bobby Brown as Princess Elodie

Millie Bobby Brown, known for her role as Eleven in the Netflix hit series Stranger Things, portrays Elodie, a plucky maiden who agrees to marry a prince only to discover that it was all a trap: the royal family recruited her as a sacrifice to settle an ancient debt.

Welcome to the Kingdom of Aurea and our spoiler-free guide to all the filming locations of Damsel. You'll find the locations in order of appearance.

The Damsel locations

Damsel location
Lord Bayford's castle in a 'Faraway Land' was filmed at Raby Castle in County Durham, England.

Built in the 14th century, this is one of the best-preserved medieval castles in the north of England.

Renowned for its architectural beauty and historical significance, the castle is still a private residence, but is open to the public seasonally from March through October.

Damsel castle
There's a lot of CGI involved in Aurea's Castle design, which seems loosely inspired by the fantastical architecture of the Pena Palace in Sintra, Portugal.

Known for its vibrant hues, intricate details, and fairytale-like appearance, this eclectic castle is one of the country's most iconic landmarks.

Built in the 19th century, Pena Palace exemplifies the Romantic architectural style popular during that period.

Damsel house
The entrance to the castle with the garden was filmed at the Convent of Christ in Tomar.

Originally built in the 12th century as the headquarters of the Knights Templar, this historic abbey is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Convent of Christ in Tomar
The wedding's venue and the cloister is the Renaissance Cloister of John III, also in the Convent of Christ in Tomar.

The short scene with the blue Portuguese tilework, called azulejos, was also recorded here.

The Gothic cloister is from the stunning Batalha Monastery, also in Portugal.

With its exquisite Manueline style ornamentation, this complex was built in the 14th century to commemorate the victory of the Battle of Aljubarrota, in which the Portuguese defeated the Castilian army and secured the kingdom's independence.

Historic Village of Sortelha
According to the local press, Damsel was also filmed in the historic village of Sortelha, which looks like the town in this screenshot.

Maybe most of the footage shot here may not have made it into the final cut.

Perched atop a rocky hill, Sortelha is a well-preserved medieval hamlet with a fortified castle dating back to the 13th century.

Coa Valley
Some of the landscapes featured in the movie are from the Côa Valley, in the Vila Nova de Foz Côa region of northeastern Portugal.

The area has been declared a World Heritage Site for its rugged landscapes along the Douro River, with steep slopes covered in vineyards.

Nossa Senhora da Boa Estrela cave
The entrance to the dragon's lair was filmed in the sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Boa Estrela near Covão do Boi in the Serra da Estrela mountain range.

Instead of the gate to the cave, there is a 22-foot (seven-meter) sculpture of the Virgin Mary, made in 1946.

Onde foi Damsel filmado
These landscapes were also filmed in the Serra da Estrela Natural Park, the largest nature reserve in Portugal.

Characterized by rugged landscapes and diverse ecosystems, one of the park's main highlights is the Torre, the highest peak in mainland Portugal.
