Released in 2003, Elf was filmed where it is set, in New York, but several key scenes were recorded in Vancouver.

Where was Elf filmed?
The entire first part of the movie at the North Pole and most of the interiors were filmed at the old Riverview Hospital in Coquitlam, near Vancouver.
Riverview has been used as a studio set for tonnes of productions filmed in the Canadian city including Virgin River, Riverdale, X-Files, and Prison Break.

It is forbidden to walk through the Lincoln Tunnel as Buddy does in the movie.
Filming the scene caused minor traffic disruption as some drivers, startled by his unexpected attire, were momentarily distracted, leading to several accidents.
This engineering marvel consists of three tubes and facilitates the flow of traffic between Manhattan and New Jersey.

Already in Manhattan, Buddy mistakes a person hailing a cab for someone waving at him while standing on the northeast corner of East 48th Street and Park Avenue, with the Helmsley Building in the background.

The shoeshine scene was filmed outside Grand Central Terminal on 42nd Street, next to the Grand Hyatt Hotel.

After extensive research for the luggage store, NYC in Film discovered the actual location of the flyer-grabbing scene, which had been wrongly cited as the southwest corner of 7th Avenue and West 46th Street.
Barely recognizable, this shop is today a New York Gifs store at 729 7th Avenue (and 49th Street).

The Elf world's best cup of coffee location
NYC in Film also did a fantastic job revealing that 'The world's best cup of coffee' was not in Manhattan but a little further away in Vancouver.
The coffee shop was actually filmed in an old restaurant with a beautiful neon sign called The Only Sea Food.
The restaurant closed in 2009, and the entire building located between Gastown and Chinatown was demolished in 2021.
The lower picture shows a Google Street View from 2012. Today, the area, which has seen better days, does not seem a good place to wander around.

According to On the Set of New York, the scene where Buddy jumps in the crosswalk is located at Broadway and East 22nd Street.

The spot where Buddy sees a man dressed a bit like Santa is just around the corner, on the northeast corner of 5th Avenue and East 23rd Street.

The second-hand chewing gum scene was also filmed there, just across the street from the Flatiron Building, at the 23rd Street Uptown & Queens subway station.

The revolving door is still there, in a building at 10 West 33rd Street, right across the street from the Empire State Building.

The lobby of the iconic Empire State Building is known for its grandeur and Art Deco style.
In real life, the buttons inside the elevator are not shaped like a Christmas tree.

The Gimbels Department Store
The Textile Building at 295 5th Avenue in Midtown Manhattan served as the Gimbels Department Store exterior.
Completed in 1920, this 16-story office building was a trade center for the textile industry for over a century.

Closed in 1987, Gimbels was a historic retail landmark, known for its prime location and vast shopping offerings.
The building occupied half of a city block between 32nd and 33rd Streets and 6th Avenue, near its nemesis, Macy's, in Herald Square.
However, the interior was filmed in Vancouver, between the Hudson's Bay department store in downtown and the old Riverview Hospital in Coquitlam.
Peter Dinklage, who became famous for portraying Tyrion Lannister in Game of Thrones, plays best-selling children's author Miles Finch.

Walter Hobbs lives at 55 Central Park West, a residential building known for its majestic Art Deco architecture and prominent location near Central Park.
Recognizable by its twin-tower design and intricate facade, the building has housed notable residents and gained further fame as Sigourney Weaver's home in Ghostbusters.

As Movie-locations.com reported, Michael's school was filmed at York Prep School at 40 West 68th Street in Lincoln Square.

The snowball fight was filmed in and around the Pinebank Arch at the southern end of Central Park.
This is one of 30 ornamental arches and bridges in the 840-acre Manhattan green space.

This Victorian-style structure serves as a weather station and an observation deck.
The Bethesda Terrace and Fountain are also featured in the final scenes of the movie.
