Based on the 2015 novel of the same name by Katherine Center, Happiness for Beginners was filmed in the same locations where the book is set, in the states of Connecticut and New York.
After facing a series of personal setbacks and feeling stuck in a rut, Helen (played by Ellie Kemper) decides to take control of her life and signs up for a wilderness survival course hiking the Appalachian Trail.

The movie opens with several establishing shots of Pittsburgh's skyline, the Pennsylvania city where Helen is based.

The motel is in Torrington, Connecticut. It’s Lakeside Motel on Winsted Road.

There is one scene with a yellow blaze on the tree in the background. This is the about 25-mile trail called the Suffern Bear Mountain trail.
One hour from NYC it starts with a 13-mile stretch with no road crossings. You either go forward or turn around.
