Where was 1923 filmed? Guide to all the filming locations in Montana & Africa

Posted by

Instead of 1883 season two, creator and producer Taylor Sheridan decided to rebrand the Yellowstone prequel series, focused on the origins of the Dutton family and their iconic ranch, as 1923.

Like its predecessors, 1923 was primarily filmed in Montana, but also in California, South Africa, Tanzania, and Malta.

Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren

Picking up 40 years after the events of 1883, the series explore the challenges that the Duttons had to face in the early years of the 20th century, navigating pandemics, a historic drought, the end of Prohibition, and the Great Depression era.

Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren play Jacob and Clara Dutton respectively. The show is narrated by Isabel May, who played the 1883 series character, Elsa.

Welcome to the best guide to all the filming locations of 1923. You’ll also find our spoiler-free article revealing all the Yellowstone series locations and the ones where Horizon was filmed following these links.

Thanks for those filming locations ^^ although you made a mistake, Spencer and Alex arrive in Sicily, aka Malta, in episode seven, not six.

The interior of the fictional Silver Dollar Soda shop was actually filmed in the real Silver Dollar Bar, several blocks away in Butte.

The exterior of the bank is the Thornton building in Butte and the interior was the Bank in Pony.

The school is also in Pony, MT. The ship was the Queen Mary in Long Beach.

Some of the filming also took place on private game reserves in KZN, South Africa. Our company provided equipment for the shoots.
