Where was Ghostbusters: Afterlife filmed? The House & the Town of Summerville, Oklahoma
Posted by Ra Moon
The first Ghostbusters film to take place outside of New York City is a continuation of the franchise that started with the 1984 classic.
The movie is set in a small town in rural Oklahoma, Summerville, although Ghostbusters: Afterlife was entirely filmed in and around Calgary in Alberta.

After the failed 2016 all-female remake, Ghostbusters, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, and Sigourney Weaver answered the call to support the film, making a cameo in different parts of this new release.
The story is a nostalgia trip set about 30 years after the events that occurred in the 1989 blockbuster, Ghostbusters II.
Welcome to Summerville and our guide to the filming locations of Ghostbusters: Afterlife.
On the way to Summerville, the family passes over the giant cowboy statue at the Bar U Ranch National Historic Site near Longview, located an hour's drive south of Calgary.

According to CBC, the entrance to the Shandor Mining was filmed at the 1908's Dorothy Ferry Bridge over the Red Deer River on Highway 848 near the tiny Dorothy hamlet in southern Alberta.
The hill in the background was CGI'd into the scene.

We immediately recognized the old grain elevator featured in several scenes with Egon (or the kids) onboard Ecto-1, as it was also featured in the Tin Star series.
This scenic spot is also located near the bridge in Dorothy.

The Ghostbusters Afterlife house
The Calgary Herald revealed that the location scouts covered 320 square kilometers of Foothills County, south of Calgary, looking for the perfect lot to build the creepy Egon Spengler's farmhouse.
RobOnLocation confirmed that the haunted house with the half-collapsed barn and the silos were built and torn down after the shoot.

Another replica of the Victorian house was built at Calgary Film Centre, where all the studio work was done.
Ivo Shandor's temple dedicated to Gozer was also a set built at the studios.
For director Jason Reitman, it was crucial that key elements in the film, including the infamous Terror Dogs, had to be practically built instead of using CGI, like in the original 80s movies.

The town of Summerville, Oklahoma
The town of Summerville is an amalgam of locations. The cool Spinner's Burgers and Shakes diner, where Lucky (played by Celeste O'Connor) works, was filmed at this not-so-cool-looking Apple Pie gas station in Beiseker.
Beiseker is a very small village located approximately 45 miles (72 Km) northeast of Calgary.

The Summerville Middle School was filmed at the W.G. Murdoch School in Crossfield, located about 27 miles (43 Km) north of Calgary.
As RobOnLocation pointed out in his magnificent report, the hardware store was filmed at the Howes Brothers Lumber and Building shop at 818 Railway Street in Crossfield.
This school is also one of the locations where Killers of the Flower Moon was filmed.

The Napier Theatre street where Podcast (played by Logan Kim) interviews Phoebe (Mckenna Grace) is 3 Avenue E in Drumheller.
Young actress Mckenna Grace also starred in Troop Zero. She has appeared in many big productions including Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and The Handmaid's Tale.
The establishing shots of the town with the water tower were also filmed in Drumheller.

The top of the mine that Trevor (Finn Wolfhard, the young star from Stranger Things and the It movies) and his new friends visit in the sunset is the Horsethief Canyon in Drumheller.
This gorgeous landscape was also featured in the fascinating Leonardo DiCaprio movie The Revenant.

The abandoned factory where Phoebe and Podcast test the proton pack and find Muncher, a green ghost similar to Slimer, was filmed at the Turner Valley Gas Plant.
This historic processing plant, opened to visitors during the summer months, was Western Canada's first commercial oilfield.

The Chinese restaurant where Callie (Carrie Coon from The Leftovers and The Sinner) and Gary (Paul Rudd, Ant-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe) have a date is the Enjoy Garden restaurant, also located in Crossfield.

The first scenes of the ghost chase scene across the town were filmed in Fort Macleod, starting at 2 Ave and 23 Street (upper picture), and continuing on 24th Street, where the Empress Theatre damaged by Phoebe shooting the proton pack is located.
Fort MacLeod has a remarkable concentration of historic buildings that makes the town perfect for filming.
Kevin Costner's 2020 feature Let Him Go and the award-winning 2005 movie Brokeback Mountain also recorded scenes in this beautiful town, located more than a hundred miles south of Calgary (166 Km) near the border with Montana.

The spot with the photogenic grain elevator where the police officer stops the kids is the Alberta Wheat Pool Grain Elevator also located in Fort MacLeod.

The sheriff's office was filmed in a building at 1154 Railway Street and the Crossfield Automotive garage, located next door, in Crossfield.
The wall advert for Stay Puft Marshmallows was painted on the side of a building across the street.

The Walmart scene with the mini Stay Puft Marshmallows and the Keymaster beast was filmed at the Deerfoot City Supercentre in Calgary.

How can you tell it's the Horseshoe and not Horsethief? There are a lot of canyons around here.

There are two major canyons in the area. Horseshoe and Horsethief. The movie was definitely shot at Horsethief Canyon. There is a distinctive bump in the scene when they drive up that you can clearly see on Google street view of the viewpoint. Visit both. They are beautiful, but the one north of Drumheller is where the ghosts are. ;-)

There are actually three canyons in Drumheller: Horseshoe Canyon, Horsethief, and Orkney lookout point.

I am 100% certain the canyon they used is HorseTHIEF, as I go there often and sit near the spot where the car stopped.
