Where was Maid filmed? Guide to ALL the Locations in Port Hampstead
Posted by Ra Moon
Although the new Netflix drama series is set in Port Hampstead, the fictional version of Port Townsend, Washington, Maid was filmed entirely in Greater Victoria on Vancouver Island, BC.
The story revolves around the life of a single mother, played by Margaret Qualley (known by her role in The Leftovers), who becomes a housekeeper after fleeing her abusive boyfriend in order to provide a better life for her daughter.
The story revolves around the life of a single mother, played by Margaret Qualley (known by her role in The Leftovers), who becomes a housekeeper after fleeing her abusive boyfriend in order to provide a better life for her daughter.
The show is inspired by the book about the real memories of American writer Stephanie Land, Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother's Will to Survive.
Land grew up between Alaska and Port Townsend, WA, before moving to Missoula, Montana, to study English and Creative Writing.
Four Weddings and a Funeral star Andie MacDowell, who plays Paula, Alex's eccentric mother, is the real-life mom of actress Margaret Qualley. Nick Robinson (Love, Simon, and A Teacher) plays Sean, the father of Alex's daughter, Maddy.
We've tried to keep this article clean of spoilers, and I think we've done a pretty good job. Welcome to our comprehensive guide to the filming locations of Maid.
Welcome to Port Hampstead and Fisher Island
In the first episode, "Dollar Store", Alex arrives with Maddy at a gas station after leaving Sean. This is Oldfield's Save-On Gas on W Saanich Road in the outskirts of Victoria.
This station also appears later on in the ninth episode, "Sky Blue".
During the series, almost in every episode, Alex takes the ferry to go to the fictional Fisher Island.
The Port Hampstead ferry terminal used in the show is the Swartz Bay Terminal near Sidney in North Saanich, connecting Vancouver Island with the Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal on the Canadian mainland.

The smaller, picturesque dock on Fisher Island was filmed at Terminal Fulford Harbour on Salt Spring Island.

Yolanda (played by Tracy Vilar) is Alex's boss, the owner of the cleaning business and laundry service Value Maids.
The office was filmed at Victoria's oldest laundromat, Tillicum Laundry, at 3472 Tillicum Road.

The Maid series house
Alex's first assignment for Value Maids in the house owned by the wealthy lawyer, Regina (played by Anika Noni Rose), doesn't turn out very well.
The luxurious waterfront villa with a jacuzzi on Fisher Island was actually filmed on McAnally Road in the Ten Mile Point neighborhood in Victoria.
Situated at the most easterly point on Vancouver Island, the garden boasts lovely views of the surrounding west coast seascape.

There's not a lot of information available about this almost 7,000 square feet property built in 2017 containing four bedrooms and bathrooms.
Regina's mansion is located next door to the iconic glass house named “The Point”, whose central vault shows up in the background of a couple of scenes.
This 1996 house with a cutting-edge design is valued by Sotheby's International Realty Canada at $6,600,000.
Several scenes taking place on the streets of Port Hampstead were filmed outside the Fuego Old Town Eatery at 1435 Store Street in Downtown Victoria.

The bar where Alex and Sean first met is also featured later on in episode eight, "Bear Hunt".
It was filmed in The Duke Saloon, a country-style bar located at 502 Discovery Street.

The Singing Swan bar where Sean works as a bartender was actually The Guild, a former restaurant and cocktail pub that now sits vacant at 1250 Wharf Street.

In the second episode, "Ponies", the scene where Alex gives back the dog to Regina was filmed at the pier near Beacon Park in Sidney, showing The Pier Bistro in the background.

The location of the secret domestic violence shelter was filmed in the town of Esquimalt.
The center is located at the Eastwood Apartments building. The crossroads where the women go to use their mobile phones is at Astle Street and Constance Avenue, but please don't tell anyone.

The group therapy meetings are held at the Monterey Recreation Centre in Oak Bay.

The art gallery where Paula was having a show in episode three, "Sea Glass", is a store at 556 Herald Street in Downtown Victoria.
The bank scene from episode seven, "String Cheese", was filmed just a few blocks from there in the Legacy Art Gallery at 630 Yates Street.

In episode four, "Cashmere", an outdoor scene with Alex and Sean was filmed at the historic Fernwood Square.
Also, several scenes in episode nine were recorded nearby. The farmer's market was set on Gladstone Avenue. The coffee shop where Alex meets Sean is Little June at 1301 Gladstone Ave.

Nate (played by Raymond Ablack) lives in a very peculiar home. The single dad and engineer can afford a registered heritage house located at 235 Howe Street in Victoria's Fairfield neighborhood.
Built in 1912, this California-style bungalow features a striking decorative Oriental timber front veranda.

Also in episode six, "M", the scene with Alex, Nate, and the kids was filmed at the Cadboro-Gyro Park in Cadboro Bay, home of the Cadborosaurus.
The restaurant from the next scene, Sassy's, is located at 6719 W Saanich Road in Brentwood Bay.
The daycare and the hospital are the Juan de Fuca Recreation Centre in Colwood. According to the CTV News, some scenes in the hospital were also filmed at Gordon Head Recreation Centre.

In the seventh episode, the Songhees Wellness Centre doubled as the Caribou Casino.
This modern multi-purpose building featuring First Nations totems is located in Esquimalt.

The Mexican restaurant Fat Paco's Tacos was filmed at the Gage Gallery in Bastion Square in Downtown.
At the time of filming, it was a vacant retail space made up to look like a restaurant.
However, the next scene when Alex and her mother take a walk was filmed at Fernwood Square.

Paula drives a gorgeous blue sky Chevrolet El Camino (the same model used in the 2019 Breaking Bad sequel movie).
The 'big sleep-out' or 'drive-in movie theater' scenes were filmed at the parking lot of the Walmart Supercentre store in Langford.

The cotton candy clouds scene from the last episode, "Snaps", was filmed at the Esquimalt Lagoon on Ocean Boulevard in Colwood.
The stunning outdoors and beautiful architecture that you can find in Vancouver Island have attracted many big film and TV productions, including the Apple series with Jason Momoa, See, War for the Planet of the Apes, Cold Pursuit, and the Syfy comedy Resident Alien.

The short scene with the lawyer Tara (played by Mozhan Marno), walking out of the office building and down the street is 545 Superior Street.
This is the new Capital Park complex behind the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia.
The meeting with Tara (pictured) was recorded at the Bear and Joey Cafe at 1025 Cook Street in Victoria.

One of the last scenes with Paula and Alex was filmed at the small beach at Clover Point in Victoria.

The series used some stock footage for the establishing shots of Missoula, home to the University of Montana.
The town is surrounded by steep hills. The giant "M" on the slope of Mount Sentinel was first built in 1908.
This 125 by 100-foot landmark has become an icon of the city, and also, of this public university.

Why not just film in Port Townsend or Port Angeles? Lovely area and they could use the revenue.

To the person asking why they didn't film in Washington state was simple: economics. It's cheaper for Americans to film in Canada.

The bar that Alex met Sean is shot is The Duke. It’s usually a country-style late-night bar located on Discovery Street.
The other bar utilized was shot in a former restaurant that now sits vacant. When it was open it was called The Guild and it’s located on Wharf Street at the bottom of Yates Street.

The hospital wasn’t at Gordon Head, it’s the Juan de Fuca Rec Centre. The cute little daycare is the daycare behind that same Rex Centre.

I saw them filming one day down by clover point- I’m pretty sure this is where Paula decides to come to Missoula with them (I might be mixing up the scene).

This film was so well done... one of the best productions I've seen on Netflix. Kudos to all the cast, staff, and Stephanie Land.

Where did they film the hiking scenes from when Alex and Maddie were going on a Bear Hunt?
15- Rachel - Dec 9, 2021, 6:18 PM
Episode 4 “Cashmere”, the scene where Alex says to Maddie “Let’s do something really fun” and they go to a small beach is filmed at Matheson Lake.

The question I really want to know is if anyone will out where their mold-ridden public housing complex is?

Where was the spooky house that Alex crawled into the tiny door to the attic?
18- Barbara - Mar 25, 2022, 1:40 PM
The “dollar store” in Dollar Store is in Esquimalt Plaza on Esquimalt Road. The welfare office she goes to is the Victoria West Recreation Centre on Craigflower. Also, did anyone else notice that the location of the “Women’s shelter” being “Astle St.” was just too perfect?

In episode 9, when Regina and Alex have lunch, it looks like the BlackFin Pub in Comox.

The moldy apartment is located at Sturdee St Esquimalt.

Does anyone know where the move-out house is located in episode 3, "Sea Glass"?

Where is the scene filmed after Alex watches Paula sleep in her car, where she sets up a chair and cooler next to the ocean? It’s almost on some sort of point, looking back at some houses.
