Publicado por Ra Moon
Now back for the second season, Shadow and Bone was primarily filmed in Hungary, using the Origo Studios in Budapest as headquarters.
The Netflix series features great filming locations showcasing the splendor of palaces, houses, and towns that once belonged to the Austro-Hungarian Empire, spiced with a Russian-style flavor.
The Netflix series features great filming locations showcasing the splendor of palaces, houses, and towns that once belonged to the Austro-Hungarian Empire, spiced with a Russian-style flavor.
The show, set in the Grishaverse fantasy world, is based on the Grisha trilogy book series and the Six of Crows novels by American writer Leigh Bardugo.
In the books, the adventures of Alina and those of The Dregs are taking place in the same universe, but are not connected.
Welcome to the best guide to all the Shadow and Bone filming locations. You’ll find all the new season 2 updates below in the report.
Shadow and Bone Locations
The Little Palace in Os Alta is the headquarters of Ravka's Second Army, composed entirely of Grisha.
The Festetics Palace located in the city of Keszthely, west of Lake Balaton, doubles as the Little Palace.
As you can see, there is only one central tower, the other four ones were digitally added to give the building a Tsarist-Empire style.

Many sections of the palace are featured in the series, including the library, the corridors, and the staircase with oak paneling.
This stately home was not a royal residence, but one of the largest country houses in Hungary. The construction of the Baroque palace and gardens started in 1745 and was not completed until the end of the 19th-century.
The ballroom in episode five, where the demonstration takes place, is the palace's concert hall.
The Keramzin orphanage is the Amadé-Bajzáth-Pappenheim Chateau, a Baroque castle located in the village of -take breath- Iszkaszentgyörgy.

The audience with the King of Ravka in the Grand Palace (the ugliest building ever, according to Kirigan), was filmed at the big hall of the Ethnographic Museum of Budapest.
Founded as part of the Hungarian National Museum in 1872, this cultural space in the Pest side of the city hosts a large collection of Hungarian folk objects.
This location was also featured as the Palace of Ev in the Emerald City series.

Several scenes were filmed at the iconic Buda castle. In episode four, the Dregs are looking for the blueprints of the Little Palace after crossing the Fold.
The exterior of the Royal Archives in Kribirsk, East Ravka, was filmed in the interior courtyard of the castle.
The modernist dome was replaced by a lower one using digital effects. The port of Novorkribirsk is also a CGI creation.

However, the interior of the Royal Archives was filmed in another very popular filming location in Budapest.
The old Budapest Stock Exchange Palace on Liberty Square (also known as the MTV building) is a monumental complex that has been empty since 2009.
It served as the abandoned casino in Las Vegas in Blade Runner 2049. The building was also featured in the Hanna series and the 2021 movie, Outside the Wire, starring Anthony Mackie.

The medieval walls of the Déli Rondella gate in the Castle Quarter of Budapest are also featured in many scenes.
In episode three, The Making at the Heart of the World, the location appears as the Grisha training grounds.
Also, this is the gate of the Ravkan capital, Os Alta, in episode five Show Me Who You Are (pictured).

The village in ruins north of Chernast from episode four, Otkazat'sya, was filmed at the Szentendre Skanzen Village Museum, an open-air museum, situated only 20 miles north of Budapest.
As you can see, the windmill and the houses were CGI'd in post-production to reflect the destruction of the conflict.
This location was also featured in The Witcher series and many local shows and films.

In Episode 6, The Heart is an Arrow, after escaping from the Little Palace Alina scopes out the streets of Ryevost, East Ravka.
These scenes were filmed in the picturesque town of Szentendre on the left bank of the Danube, a few miles away north of Budapest.
Szentendre is a lovely small city featuring narrow alleys, cobblestone streets, and pastel-colored buildings.

Some Hungarian websites reported the location of the ruins where Kirigan created the Fold in the flashback scene of episode seven, The Unsea.
The Széchényi-Wenckheim castle was a neo-baroque mansion house built between 1906 and 1909 in Póstelek near Békéscsaba.
The beautifully landscaped park can be visited, but you won't find the gargoyle statues, they were just film props.

The new season 2 locations
The Novyi Zem checkpoint hall in the first episode, "No Shelter But Me", is the Royal Riding Hall in Buda Castle.
Severely damaged in the Second World War, the Communist regime decided to demolish what was left of this neo-baroque building after the war.
The reconstruction of this late 19th-century building was completed in 2019.

The library where Alina looks through old maps is the stunning neo-baroque Szabó Ervin Library, housed in the 19th-century Wenckheim Palace.

Many scenes including the busy market in Weddle, the street in Ketterdam (pictured), and the fifth episode in Bhez Ju were recorded at the studio's backlot.
Also, the establishing shots of these cities were generated via CGI.

In the third episode, "Like Calls to Like", Nikolai’s Spinning Wheel sanctuary was CGI'd into the scene.
The interior is again the old Budapest Stock Exchange Palace, which was already featured as the Royal Archives in the first season.
The Grand Palace scenes in the next episodes were also filmed here.

This castle in ruins is also a very popular filming location in Hungary.
The Az Egri vár másolata is a fake castle in Pilis, originally built in the 1960s to shoot an epic Hungarian movie called Egri Csillagok.

Pekka Rollins's glass factory in Appelbroek is the Brunszvik Castle (Brunszvik-kastély), an 18th-century aristocratic residence located in Martonvásár near Budapest.

Dominik Vertov’s castle in the sixth episode, "Ni Weh Sesh (I Have No Heart)", is the Fort Monostor (Monostori Erod).
This 19th-century fortress is located in the city of Komárom, at the Hungarian-Slovakian border.
The upper section of the stronghold was added using digital effects.

The royal quarters in the season finale, "No Funerals", is the historical Wenckheim Palace.
Built between 1887 and 1889, this gorgeous neo-baroque mansion is located in the heart of Budapest.

The throne room is the fascinating Romanesque Hall at the Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest.
Built between 1900 and 1906, the museum’s most ornate room was closed to the public after being damaged in the war.
For all these years, only a few staff members had access until its restoration was completed in 2018.
