Where was Jojo Rabbit filmed? Filming Locations Guide
Posted by Ra Moon
The anti-hate satire Jojo Rabbit tells a story in World War II from a young children's perspective.
Director Taika Waititi (What we do in the Shadows, Thor: Ragnarok) plays the boy's imaginary friend, Adolf Hitler. Adolf comes from the mind of a 10-year-old, so naive Hitler only knows what a 10-year-old knows.

The anti-Nazi parody is also starring Roman Griffin Davis as Jojo, Scarlett Johansson plays his mother Rosie Betzler and Thomasin McKenzie is the Jewish girl Elsa.
Sam Rockwell is Captain Klenzendorf, the army officer in charge of the Hitler Youth camp and Alfie Allen is silent Finkel.
Jojo Rabbit was filmed in historical towns and villages in the Czech Republic. The interiors were built in the Barrandov Studios in Prague. Here is our guide to filming locations of the movie:
Most of the exterior shots of the German city where the movie takes place were shot in Žatec, a large town 50 miles northwest of Prague.
The production was filmed in the beautiful main square and the streets around it.

Like many towns in Czechia, Žatec preserves a magnificent historical old town of colorful buildings.
The city is renowned for the production of excellent beer and hops. Žatec was annexed to the Third Reich as part of the Sudetenland in 1938, as most of the original inhabitants were German speakers.

The small picturesque village of Ustek (situated in the Ústecký Region), was also used for filming.
The town, featuring a center with many well-preserved late Gothic townhouses, has been often used as a backdrop for films.
According to Architectural Digest, the interior of Jojo's house was built from scratch in the studio.

The exterior of the library is the Petschek Palace in Prague.
This building, erected between 1923 and 1929, was originally a bank, equipped with many modern features for the time as air-conditioned, tube post, phone switch-board, and massive safes in the basement.
This may be the reason why the palace was chosen as the Gestapo headquarters during the Nazi occupation years (1939–1945).

The swimming pool is the Sokol Gymnastics Club in Praha, in the Vinohrady neighborhood of Prague.

There is a scene where Jojo and his mom have a walk near the river.
This beautiful setting with the staircase is the HoÅ™Ãn lock (Zdymadlo HoÅ™Ãn), part of the navigation channel MÄ›lnÃk - Vraňany, put into service in 1905.

The scenes with dilapidated buildings during the war were shot in the former Lenešice sugar refinery (cukrovaru Lenešice).
The Czech Film Commission reported that additional filming took place in KytÃn and Dolnà BeÅ™kovice.
