So, don't search for the Hotel Bella Donna on Vis Island, Booking.com, or elsewhere, as it doesn’t exist.

The hotel and most of the song and dance numbers were filmed on the soundstages at Shepperton Studios in Surrey, England.

Mamma Mia Oxford
But before we return to Greece (or, more accurately, Croatia), the movie takes us back to 1979 in a flashback sequence filmed at the New College hall in Oxford.

This grand medieval dining hall, built in 1379, is still used today for daily student meals, formal dinners, and special ceremonies.

Kalokairi Island

Kalokairi Island
For six weeks, the production crew invaded the usually quiet and gorgeous island of Vis in Croatia, doubling as the Kalokairi Island in Greece.

A small wooden jetty was built on the Vrboska beach (or Barjoska), which was used as a backdrop for several scenes.

Vis Ferry Harbour
The main dock, from which several characters arrive on the island, was filmed at Vis Ferry Harbour.

Vis is approximately 53 km (33 miles) southwest of Split, making it one of the more remote Croatian islands in the Adriatic Sea.

Despite its distance, the island is well-connected to the mainland by daily ferries and catamarans.

The scene where Bill and Donna help a fisherman reach the wedding was filmed on a small dock on Peninsula Prilovo near Vis Town, with the historic 16th-century St. Jerome Franciscan Monastery in the background.

Vis is also home to a series of former secret naval bases, abandoned by the Yugoslav army, which can be visited on a guided tour.
